Nightflight

It was back in 1994 that Ady Zehnpfennig last made a recording where the contents were dictated by his performance on a specific organ. In recent times he has been active in his recording studio producing high-end sound samples for the new Wersi OAS instruments. It was only when Andreas Mautner, editor of the German organ and keyboard magazine OKEY! together with his wife, International organist Claudia Hirschfeld, suggested he should release a new recording that he agreed the time was right to showcase these fabulous new sounds. And this is the result…

"Nightflight" is Ady Zehnpfennig's personal choice of titles which he had a completely free hand in choosing and which also presented him with the possibility of fulfilling some of his own musical aspirations. For instance, he always wanted to record a new arrangement of his original composition "Marco Polo". Also included is his own small orchestral work "Nightflight", which also gives its name to the CD.

All the arrangements utilise the fantastic sounds of the new Wersi OAS generation with some AKAI samples. At the same time Ady also wanted to emphasise the organ drawbar sounds, to do this he used the Wersi OX7 drawbar expander as well as an original electro-magnetic Hammond organ. As Ady was both artist and sound engineer he was able to fabricate some special sound experiments, both digitally and with the loudspeakers and valve amplifiers.

He had a lot of fun playing a legendary Wersi Comet again. Without this organ his composition "Marco Polo" would not have been possible. Ady's talents are not confined to playing organ and keyboards, on this production he played all the guitar tracks, using two 6-string and one 12-string guitar, the sounds were then combined with another two electric guitars. The drums were played in real time with a Roland Midi drum machine and some other portions feature real drum samples. The drums, bass and accompaniment tracks were achieved with a software sequencer that allowed him to experiment with different introductions, key and tempo changes. All other tracks were recorded direct onto the hard disk recording system 'Pro Tools', mostly for the whole length of the title and containing all the audio. Then, depending on his feeling, he played three or four different versions of the melody line, but the final one was not chosen until the final mastering.
