Alan Ashton's Organised Keyboards Review (from ORGAN1st Magazine Issue 30):

Next year will see the 10th Anniversary of the sudden death of Klaus Wunderlich, and in the ensuing years Bell Musik of Germany has steadily continued to release many of his recordings, ranging from those he made in his pioneering Hammond sound days, to the later New Pop organ sound releases. The title of the latest double CD release is MUSICAL (BLR89112) a title which is borrowed from the original Teldec LP release of 1985. The entire programme of 14 tracks is contained on CD 1, all of which have been remastered from the original analog master tapes from his collection, and as the title (s) indicate the tracks were all well known show stopping numbers from films and Broadway shows. The lions share of tracks come from the combined pens of composers Rodgers & Hammerstein: four numbers which revive memories of SHOWBOAT / OKLAHOMA / SOUTH PACIFIC and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Sprinkle this confection with hits from ANNIE GET YOUR GUN / AQUARIUS / MY FAIR LADY / A CHORUS LINE / CABARET / WEST SIDE STORY / HELLO DOLLY / PROMISES, PROMISES / JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and the recording reveals itself to be one of the brightest and best that the maestro produced… not that ever produced anything that was otherwise!

CD 2 is revealed as the entire 14 tracks from the Connoisseur Collection release of 1994 titled KLAUS WUNDERLICH PLAYS ABBA. Klaus only released a handful of recordings via this label and so it is a welcome pairing with the aforementioned Teldec LP. What can you say about ABBA that has not already been said a thousand times over. Their songs and melodies have long ago entered into the files marked timeless. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY / SUPER TROUPER / I HAVE A DREAM / LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME / S.O.S / WINNER TAKES IT ALL etc. etc. Once again a lot of hard work has gone into the preparation of the compilation, and although neither set of master tapes would have been in need of as much audio restoration as some of the much earlier Hammond releases from Bell Musik, Engineer Werner Kohlhammer has succeeded in giving them a brighter more noticeable stereo sound. Taking a rest from writing the sleeve notes of the past couple of releases, I suggested to my wife that she might like to do the honours, after all she was the original Klaus Wunderlich Fan Club Secretary. Her copious notes hark back to the days when Klaus was just becoming popular in the UK, and reveal that a private concert he gave at a top London Hotel cost the original Club Members the princely sum of £7 each. And there was a buffet included as well! Priceless value... as indeed is this latest compilation.
